Our client is an apparel company who specializes in childrenswear in New York City. We are recruiting for an Assistant Designer, Girls to join their team. Candidates should have 1-3 years of apparel design experience and have CAD, Illustrator/Photoshop, and tech pack support.
Position Summary
We are seeking a creative, detail-oriented Assistant Designer to support the development of girls’ apparel collections from initial concept through final product development.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career designer looking to grow within children’s apparel. The Assistant Designer will work closely with the Designer and cross-functional teams to support seasonal design development, CAD creation, tech packs, sample review, color and print development, and overall organization of the design process.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Creative Support
Assist with seasonal trend, color, fabric, print, graphic, trim, and silhouette research.
Support the creation of mood boards, color palettes, trend boards, and seasonal presentations.
Create and update CADs, sketches, colorways, prints, graphics, and layouts using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Assist the Designer in developing commercially relevant girls’ apparel collections.
Maintain seasonal design files, artwork, color standards, and presentation materials.
Product Development
Assist with the creation and updating of tech packs, including sketches, construction details, artwork, colorways, fabrics, and trims.
Track design updates and revisions throughout the development process.
Review and organize lab dips, strike-offs, trims, artwork submissions, and development samples.
Prepare samples and materials for fittings and design reviews.
Participate in fittings and record design-related comments and changes.
Help ensure design information is accurate and communicated clearly to cross-functional teams.
Market & Customer Support
Conduct competitive shopping and trend research to identify key items, colors, prints, and market direction.
Assist with customer-specific presentations, line sheets, and market materials.
Make CAD, color, print, and design updates based on internal and customer feedback.
Support preparation for seasonal line reviews and market appointments.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Design, Merchandising, Product Development, Technical Design, Production, and Sales teams.
Assist with communication to overseas teams regarding artwork, design details, and sample revisions.
Support seasonal calendars and help ensure design deadlines are met.
Maintain organized sample rooms, design materials, color standards, and development files.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design or related field preferred.
1–3 years of apparel design experience, including internships or assistant-level experience.
Children’s apparel, girls’ sportswear, baby/toddler, or licensed apparel experience preferred.
Strong Adobe Illustrator skills; Photoshop proficiency preferred.
Understanding of garment construction, fabrics, trims, color, prints, and graphics.
Experience creating or assisting with CADs and tech packs.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication skills and willingness to learn and take direction.
PLM or product lifecycle software experience is a plus.
